(Atlanta News First) — Renowned civil rights Attorney Ben Crump will join the family of an 18-year-old shot and killed by police in Newnan last month for a Friday news conference. Alongside two other attorneys, Crump is expected to make a “major announcement” in the case. Atlanta News First plans to stream the remarks live. On Oct. 3 at around 1 a.m., a Newnan police officer saw a white car and followed it until it stopped on Cliff Circle, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI). As the officer approached and tried to speak with the driver, five men got out of the car, the GBI said. One man walked toward a nearby home, while the other four — including Zadarious Dorsey— ran, according to the GBI. The officer chased him and used a Taser before he allegedly saw Dorsey pull a gun from his waistband. He ordered him to drop it before shooting him several times, the GBI said. Dorsey was taken to the hospital, where he died. Authorities haven’t commented on why the officer followed the vehicle. Dorsey’s family claims he wasn’t armed, noting that the handgun investigators recovered was found about 42 feet away from where he fell. This is a developing story.
